The bow tie is a descendant of
the tie knotted. It was born from the need for neckwear that was easier to use
than the tie and that would last a more active day. At the end of the 19th

For me, wearing a bow tie is not
an attempt to assimilate, but a covering teacher's costume, a survival tactic
against the rude treatment of students and colleagues whose intolerance allows
them to easily dismiss the Latino as a credible classroom professional .
Since I started using bow ties in
2011, an interesting trend developed. My student evaluations increased
significantly towards the highest percentile. More importantly, since when
using bow ties, no more evaluations appeared that expressed concern about my
supposed aggressiveness, lack of academic rigor or machismo. And the disdainful
comments of being an "angry Latino" diminished. I dressed up the
negative stereotypes of Latinx to a teacher with good academic training.
Of course, another variable to
consider is that my hair has become more grayish (despite the Greek formula).
As I get older, I think that along with the bow tie,
this Latin body, which was once younger and therefore more "dangerous and
aggressive", became a softer version that resembles the gentle gardener.
